![]() The family’s involvement does not stop with the college and their mark can be seen on the history of St. Joseph as a whole. John Byrne Logan was a leading force in bringing the Air National Guard to St. Joseph and historian Sheridan Logan continues to be actively involved in the community and is the author of "Old Saint Jo, Gateway to the West, 1799-1932." Beshears Hall is named in honor of Kelsy B. Beshears, a highly respected advocate for the civil rights movement in this community and in the state of Missouri. A graduate of Howard University, Mrs. Beshears was a schoolteacher and the first guidance counselor in the Washington, DC School District. In 1946, She moved to St. Joseph and served as president of the local and state chapters of the NAACP and as coordinator for the regional chapters. In 1968, she developed the Brookdale East Apartment Complex, which she continued to operate until her death.
